Sorry, I thought I was :)

Setting a default at build time is still certainly good practice for
the distro/packager.

Disagree, it should still also be buildtime-configurable, overridable
in the configs.

Agreed.  Perhaps we should open an issue on github, marked 'easy',
so someone in community can implement it.
