Some new findings: strace shows that java reads

/sys/fs/cgroup/memory/user.slice/user-0.slice/session-c254.scope/memory.limit_in_bytes

instead of

/sys/fs/cgroup/memory/memory.limit_in_bytes


root at debian10:~# cat /sys/fs/cgroup/memory/user.slice/user-0.slice/session-c254.scope/memory.limit_in_bytes
9223372036854771712
root at debian10:~# cat /sys/fs/cgroup/memory/memory.limit_in_bytes
4294967296


user.slice and system.slice are part of systemd, AFAIK. Is systemd
to blame here, at least for spreading confusion?
