Your switch can handle multiple macs, but does vmware allows it as
well (this IS, on a vmware VM, right)? AFAIK some configurations only
allows one MAC per VM "port".

Start with a simpler configuration first. e.g. use a physical server
(or your laptop) that is connected to a switch.
