Sorry, that was just an example, and it seems a very wrong one. ;-)

Basically this  ...
%{_bindir}/whatever/*
...just claims the files inside the directory, without the directory
itself. Right?

And this...
%{_bindir}/whatever/
claims both files and directory.

And I would say your explanation with the bindir not owned by lxc is
of course valid. Sorry for the bad example...

Some cases with an asterisk are in the spec (although this is the one
I use currently, so some of them may be my fault...):
> %{_bindir}/%{name}-* %{_mandir}/man[^3]/* %{_sbindir}/* 
> %{_libdir}/*.so.* %{_libdir}/python* %{_localstatedir}/* 
> %{_libdir}/python3.3/site-packages/_%{name}*
