"dpkg-query -l | grep lxc" was illuminating.
I had out of date lxcfs and lxc-templates.
Looks like installing a fresh lxc does not trigger installing a
matching lxcfs or lxc-templates.
Doing "apt-get install lxcfs lxc-templates" sorted things out nicely
on my ubuntu 15.04 box.
