Oh forgot to answer this part - the discussion is proceeding too slowly
to tell.  Eric's proposed solution suggested that he didn't understand
the problem we're trying to solve.  It's also not particularly high on
anyone's priority list since few people are trying to do this yet, and
there are workarounds for anyone who is.
