That's because you're using LXC 0.9.0 which didn't do that.  We've got
1.0.3 in rawhide for testing now.

Version 0.9.0, the user id is root and the password is root.

Ok...  And what happens when you try to log in as root with a password
of root.  Paste the complete result from one login: prompt to the next
login prompt.
