In short, you set LXC_AUTO to false, which turns off container
auto-start, then appear to be surprised that your containers don't
auto-start :)

Just don't change LXC_AUTO and set "lxc.start.auto = 1" in your
container config (as you appear to have done) and everything will work
as expected.
