It doesn't really matter to me or to any of the Debian based distros,
but I seem to remember the version number being a problem to the RPM
based distros in the past, so I'd rather not change the format unless we
first make sure it's going to work with everyone's packaging.
(And if we do change format, I'd only start doing it with alpha2 to
avoid some extra confusion)
